7601-54-9 Usage
Uses
Used in Cleaning Industry:
Trisodium phosphate is used as a cleaning agent for its ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes and cause the contents to leak out. It is also used as a water softener, for the treatment of boiler water, as a paint remover, and in toilet floor cleaners.
Used in Food Industry:
Trisodium phosphate is used as a food additive, primarily for acidity regulation. It is commonly found in dry, extruded cereals, where it modifies cereal color, aids in the flow through the extruder, and provides phosphorus fortification. It is also used as an emulsifier in cheese sauces.
Used in Manufacturing Industry:
TSP is used in the manufacturing of paper and for clarifying sugar. It is also used as a common laboratory reagent to dissolve dirt, grease, and mildew from various surfaces.
Used in Construction Industry:
Trisodium phosphate is used as a flux for hard soldering joints in medical grade copper plumbing. It is also used for cleaning, degreasing, and deglossing walls prior to painting, as it breaks the gloss of oil-based paints and opens the pores of latex-based paint, providing a better surface for adhesion.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Trisodium phosphate is used as an emulsifier and buffer that is strongly alkaline. It helps maintain product pH and functions as an emulsifier in processed cheese to improve texture, maintains viscosity, and prevents phase separation in evaporated milk.
Used in Industrial Applications:
Different salts of phosphoric and polyphosphoric acids, including trisodium phosphate, are used in flotation. Sodium phosphate is the preferred species in this application.
Preparation
Trisodium phosphate may be prepared in two steps, first by adding a little excess of sodium carbonate to phosphoric acid and then boiling the solution to expel carbon dioxide. Sodium hydroxide is then added to the solution:
Na2CO3+ H3PO4→Na2HPO4+ CO2+ H2O
Na2HPO4+ NaOH →Na3PO4+ H2O
Alternatively, trisodium phosphate may be prepared by complete neutralization of phosphoric acid with sodium hydroxide, followed by evaporation and crystallization:
H3PO4+ 3NaOH →Na3PO4+ 3H2O
Hazard
Toxic by ingestion, irritant to tissue.
Flammability and Explosibility
Nonflammable
Mechanism of action
TSP is a tribasic orthophosphate with a pH of 10.0–12.0 in aqueous solution,
and overall alkalinity aids in its interaction with cell membrane lipids, resulting
in membrane leakage . TSP may also increase
the sensitivity of some microorganisms to nisin and lysozyme.
Safety Profile
Moderately toxic by intravenous route. Mutation data reported. A strong, caustic material. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Na2O and POx. See also PHOSPHATES.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 7601-54-9 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,6,0 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 5 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7601-54:
(6*7)+(5*6)+(4*0)+(3*1)+(2*5)+(1*4)=89
89 % 10 = 9
So 7601-54-9 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
